Assistant Director Job Description

Catmandu, Carson City’s cage-free no-kill cat rescue and sanctuary is seeking an Assistant Director (AD). The Biggest Little Rescue in Nevada, we accomplish great things via unique approaches, a one-of-a-kind facility, and a small but dedicated staff committed to helping homeless and at-risk cats.

The Assistant Director is actively involved in almost every aspect of running Catmandu and increasing our lifesaving efforts. It is an active, demanding, and incredibly rewarding position.

The AD greets visitors and helps answer phone calls and emails; interacting with donors, potential volunteers, visitors, potential adopters, fosters, members of the public seeking information or assistance, and other animal organizations. They assist with adoptions and tours as necessary. They interact with staff and volunteers to help ensure the cats get the best possible care and that Catmandu is functioning smoothly.

The AD is deeply involved in the welfare of the cats in our care. They assist in managing intake of new cats and helping them transition, help monitor the status of current cats, and interact with the cats to help them achieve their potential and live their best possible life.

There is office work. The AD receives and processes a variety of forms, as well as maintaining the shelter database.  They help publicize adoptable cats thru Petfinder and similar sites.

The AD is in charge of our social media program, actively working to maintain and increase awareness and involvement of Catmandu.

Select Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Genuine love for cats and desire to help them achieve their best possible life.

  • Outgoing, personable, patient, and professional; able to work and communicate well with a variety of people in a wide variety of situations.

  • Calm demeanor and ability to handle stress.

  • Emotionally stable with ability to handle the ups, downs, and heartaches that are an inevitable part of animal rescue and adoptions.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 

  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail in data entry and written communications.

  • Comfortable and proficient with computer technology, including Windows, Outlook, Word, Dropbox and Excel. Able to learn new programs and software. Knowledge of shelter management databases is a plus. 

  • Strong organizational skills. 

  • Able to manage multiple tasks, embrace change, and work with frequent interruptions. 

  • Able to follow-through on tasks and meet deadlines. 

  • Demonstrate compassion for people and animals, while enthusiastically supporting the organization’s policies and procedures.

  • Able to work with cats of all ages and demeanors, ranging from very tame to semi-feral.

  • Willing to accept and utilize homeopathy and holistic approaches to the cats’ mental and physical health in addition to standard veterinary care.

  • Willing to constantly learn and integrate new information.

  • Able to take initiative and make decisions.

  • Ability to problem solve

  • Able to work with minimal supervision.

  • Maturity, good judgment, and a professional personal appearance. 

  • Able to deal with stressful situations in a professional manner



  • Customer Service experience required

  • Office experience strongly preferred

  • Familiarity with Microsoft products preferred

  • Experience working in a rescue or animal shelter strongly preferred.

  • Ability to lift and carry at least 25 lbs, walk, lift, stretch and bend to catch, carry and care for the cats. Ability to move quickly if needed. Pretzel positions are occasionally required.

  • Must have valid CA or NV Driver’s license, dependable transportation and current auto insurance. 

  • Located in or ability to relocate to the general Carson City area.


This is a salaried position working 30 hours per week with the potential to increase to full-time with pay increase. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm with two weeks paid vacation after 1 year.


Starting Salary - $20K per year
